Xujiahui Cathedral (St. Ignatius Cathedral)

Historic & Religious

158 Puxi Lu
Shanghai

Description

This famous Shanghai attraction was once better known as the St. Ignatius Cathedral. Founded by Jesuits in 1848, the brick-red Gothic structure has served numerous purposes over the years: the headquarters for rebel forces during the Taiping Rebellion, a missionary seminary, orphanage, college, library, publishing house, and observatory. Now restored, mass is now held here on Sundays.
